Do You Like to Read Mystery Stories?

As a published novelist, I have wondered if I could come up with a “mystery” story. Could there possibly be a “NEW” plot that someone hasn’t already used? I have noticed in my reading and in watching TV shows that the perpetrator of the crime is usually the least likely to be suspected and the person who solves the crime, usually finds some very obscure clue that helps to clear up the mystery. Whether it’s a “Murder She Wrote” episode or another mystery show (and there are plenty of them) the idea is to try to figure out how to solve the mystery. Or figure out “Who Done it?” A lot of the time, it’s a slip of the tongue. The guilty person SAYS something that tips off the investigator somehow. What do you think? Could there possibly be a plot that someone hasn’t already used? I’ve thought of a few things but I’m not sure if I could manage to write something that someone else hasn’t already done.

I am a big fan of mystery novels, TV shows and movies. I don't think any fresh plots remain at this point. It's about characterization.

I'm sure that is true. So maybe I can come up with some new characters. Someone eccentric or odd in some way but believable. Hmmmmm. I'll have to think about that.

@JohnRoberts Agatha Christie is a very good mystery writer. Probably the most well-known in the world, I would say.

Yes, I like mysteries. How did you do with the novels you published?

@1hopefulman It is a light romance with a background on raising thoroughbred race horses. I wrote it way back in 1985 for a contest. I found the manuscript recently while cleaning out my "home office" and decided to update it and publish it.

Of course. Use your imagination and go for it. Make it your own.

I do have a couple ideas. I am one chapter away from finishing my second novel right now and once I get that published, I will think about writing a mystery novel.
