“Who you?”

This is one of the questions we Filipinos ask if somebody texts or miscalls us in our mobile phones and we don’t know who he or she is. Actually, it is spelled “HU U?”
One more Filipino manner of answering texts messages, or informing others is, “Dito na me, wer na u?” Translated in English, this means, “I am here already, where are you now?”
The other day, I received a missed call and a text message in my Globe number which has no load at all (I load my mobile numbers one at a time, alternately). It is not the usual HU U but the sender was asking me if I own the number. “Mam Ingrid?” was what the sender sent me.
I did not reply because my Globe number was not loaded. Besides, the sender is not my colleague because all my co-instructors know my 3 numbers. It is possible that the sender is a student; I don’t know who gave my number but i hope it is not one of my colleagues because that is one thing I dislike-giving my numbers to anybody without my permission. It is our right to privacy, right?

I usually type the whole, polite " do I know you? " cause it might be business and money coming in
, I welcome unknown texts cause my number is posted on online selling sites.

Some of us find that reply as an offensive one. Well, maybe we can make some good reply aside from Hu U, he he.

if it was a student and they asked you about it, ask him/her where he/she got your number. if they say it was one of your colleagues, then let them know or remind them about your preference.

i called the attention of Miss CC, my colleague, because she gave my phone number to a student. naturally when that student called me up and sent me a text message, i did not respond. when i asked my colleagues who shared my number, CC answered it was she. i then called her attention to not do that anymore because that is personal. she apologized. now, she asks my permission if she can share my number.

Nope. I don't give out my numbers. And my mobile number now is just a year. I discarded my 15 years Smart number.

When I received a miss call or a text message from someone i don't know, I would first check with my laptop, search for the number first. usually it is either the bank, insurance company unit trust company or loan sharks , which neither of them I had any connection with. So, I never ask "Hu U ? "

Sometimes I ignore those numbers that send text messages especially if I am not interested in what they are saying.
But if it is a call, I usually ask, "may I know your name?" or simply ask "who are You". If the person do not answer, I usually call the number and listen first if I know his or her voice...
