I never thought about it, but when our city's new station was opened, all the schools were invited and they had several students from each school hold a huge circle of ribbon and they all cut it at the same time as the mayor. Each of us got a small sliver of ribbon to take home.

For me Ribbon cutting is for giving a business some good opening as it gets more attention with people

yeah, Chinese has this ribbon cutting ceremony for opening of new business premises, always get those big shots to promote, waste money

Promotion expenses are high but big businesses seem ignorant of this.
