Why Do Doctors Keep Prescribing Me Meds That List Suicidal Thoughts or Attempts as a Side Effect?

I have battled chronic major depression since I was a kid. This has included decades of suicidal thoughts, and yes, many suicide attempts. So I'm baffled why doctors keep prescribing me meds that flat out say on them not to take if you have a history of this, as these meds can cause suicidal thoughts and/or attempts. The new medication I was prescribed to treat my migraines is one such med. It also says it can cause heart block and you may be at an increased risk if you already have a low heart rate, which I do at times. I was going to start taking this med tonight but now I'm going to wait and call the doctor tomorrow to find out if it's safe for me to do so. I have lived with migraines all my life, much longer than I've had depression; I am not willing to risk my life to treat the headaches. I battle that demon enough on my own without some medication worsening the problem. I never would have thought that something used to treat migraines could cause you to kill yourself. But this poses a bigger question: why do so many medications nowadays have the potential to make you suicidal? This is not the first med I've gotten that listed this side effect; it seems like most of them come with this warning nowadays. Kinda makes you wonder what, exactly, it is the pharmaceutical company is selling us.

I have ADHD, Aspergers and Social Anxiety disorder and thanatophobia but I stopped taking anti-depressants and Lithium treatments when I discovered Bananas. Yup I am talking about the fruit. That fruit fights depression because it produces endorphin and Beta Blockers. I had never been a fight for years because of Bananas. I also don't feel depressed from negative experiences anymore because of bananas. If you hate bananas add them in Smoothies. Unlike those meds that makes me insane, I moved to Bananas. You can research about bananas your self. I use to take meds for my mental disorders too but all I needed is eating bananas everyday. Monkeys likes them for a reason.

@Srbageldog I eat a banana for each meal as some sort of a dessert. Whenever I feel down, I grab a banana and I will better. Smoothies are indeed the best way to enjoy them. you can also use banana's relative Plantain as a potato replacement. Leafy Vegetables like Spinach and kale and Oily fishes like sardine and tuna are good for migraines. Head massagers are also good for headaches. Some of them can be purchase in health stores. I am not sure if this will work for you but it works for me, when it comes to stress and migraines. I wear a headset and watch an ASMR video. This video might be very weird but the sounds it makes stimulates the cranial nerve which gives you a Euphoric feeling if you watch it while wearing a headset. Youtube have endless numbers of ASMR videos.

Very interesting! I will have to research this. I used to try to eat a banana a day but I kept forgetting and they would just spoil, so I stopped buying them. I should probably buy them again and start making smoothies. How many bananas a day do you typically eat? I haven't found anything that prevents my migraines yet, but I have noticed that eating dark chocolate usually helps get rid of them. I think it's the caffeine in it. Maybe if I start eating dark chocolate every day, I'll just stop getting migraines.

@CaptAlbertWhisker Thank you for these tips, I will have to look into adding those things to my diet. And I will check the video out later! I would much rather find a way to treat my health issues without putting poison into my body.

I was going to say, I think most have that as a warning. I actually think they all have pretty much the same side effects.. which can't be good for those with problems. I won't take meds because of the side effects they all have.

I really don't want to take meds. I think it's sort of ridiculous that it's the 21st century and there's no medications to treat migraines that aren't anticonvulsants (at least that's what I keep getting prescribed.) It's seizure medication. I also think it's ridiculous that they haven't come up with medicine that doesn't pose the risk of killing us if we take it. So many of these meds list scary things that can happen, like organ failure or weird deadly conditions you can get from it. Why on earth would I want to put that in my body? I don't even like taking Tylenol.

@Courtlynn I used to pop ibuprofen right and left because a doctor told me I could to treat my migraines. I would take 4 pills at a time, up to 4 times a day. What that doctor didn't tell me was that ibuprofen tears up your stomach, and can also cause kidney failure if you take it too frequently. I was lucky and just got the tore up stomach. Some other lady I met online got kidney failure from it. So now I won't take painkillers unless I absolutely have to. I didn't even like taking them after surgery. Medication scares me, probably because it's all essentially poison you're putting in your body with the hope that it will correct some health problem... But then it creates other problems in return.

I prefer to take no meds. I currently just take two: Pepcid (to treat GERD -- I HAVE to take this or I wind up in agony, and I don't want to end up with throat cancer somewhere down the road from the acid reflux eating up my esophagus) and birth control to treat my endometriosis. I won't even take pain killers unless I'm in agony. Even after I had surgery, I stopped taking the pain killers as soon as I started feeling a little better.
