What a weekend!!!! I'll talk about it later, simply because it was terrific. But first, it's time for more musical countdowns! A while back I did a series on favorite songs with "water" in the title. Now I expand on that theme, looking at songs that have "river" and other bodies of water in the titles. I'll start with the rivers, and the first song on the list.
#10: In the River - The Call
I really didn't include this song so I could say "I think The Call was the most underrated band of the 80s" again. I included it because this most underrated band of the 80s delivered a great, great song.
Michael Been had a stage presence and a half. Thundering, unique bass playing and a booming voice demanded your attention. (And he was a very nice man: I got to meet them the second time I saw them.) The Call had songs that mixed politics ("I don't think there are any Russians, and there ain't no Yanks, just corporate criminals playing with tanks" in "The Walls Came Down") and Been's deep religious convictions (their last single, "What's Happened to You," and Been played one of the apostles in The Last Temptation of Christ) for some seriously good rock and roll.
Oh, do I remember them singing this song in concert. The Call delivered it with the power of a raging river, and we sang it back to them.
Michael Been died at the age of 60 while on tour as a sound engineer for his son's band, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. His son has joined the other members of The Call for tributes.
What a song. What a band.

Good 80s rock with a touch of new wave and my ear hears a slight 60s influence.
