Favorite New Model Army Songs #3 - "Here Comes the War"

Protest songs, political songs, songs about class struggle. I love them all, and as far as I'm concerned, nobody does them as well as one of my favorite bands, New Model Army. I'm counting down my favorite NMA tunes, and we are at #3: "Here Comes the War." When they recorded their 1993 album, The Love of Hopeless Causes, New Model Army were still a trio. And while vocalist/guitarist Justin Sullivan has always been the band's principle songwriter, he often co-wrote with other band members. Such is the case with "Here Comes the War," which was written by Sullivan, drummer Robert Heaton (R.I.P.,) and then-bassist Nelson. While the song title might imply a diatribe about war, such as our upcoming resumption of the Korean War, it's actually a class struggle tune, predicting an uprising by an overcrowded lower class. It was the only single released from the album, and performed decently, reaching #25 in the UK, and #33 in Sweden. (And on a personal level, I have met current band members, keyboardist/guitarist Dean White and drummer Michael Dean. Both really nice guys.) I've linked to an energetic live video that also serves as an indication of what a great live band New Model Army is. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

They are addressing the longest running "war" in humanity. That type of "wars" are brewing today and the ones to really fear.

I will never argue that point and one things I take solace is never heard bands compete about who does the best protest songs. I think they are all usually great because people gave a crap took some time to learn about it and poured some passion in it. I have to say this song sounds like everything you describe. Well done on them.

That's the thing. All these message bands actually care.

Reminds you of the 60s and the "war on poverty," that we apparently lost a long time ago. Definitely a punk sound, but shouldn't we be mad about this?

Too many other things to be mad at right now. Like who is standing for the National Anthem.
