Favorite Industrial Songs #4 - "Sex on the Flag"

There's a bit of an interesting story as to how #4 in my Favorite Industrial Songs series came about. The fourth spot belongs to "Sex on the Flag" by KMFDM. Led by vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Sasha Konietzko, KMFDM is an industrial band formed in Hamburg, Germany in 1984, and, counting a hiatus, are still at it today. They are, along with Nine Inch Nails and Ministry, considered one of the bands that brought industrial music to a mainstream audience, having released over 200 songs during their lengthy career, and have sold more than two million records worldwide. When it came time to record their 1992 album, Money, Sasha and drummer En Esch were not speaking to each other. The record company, Wax Trax!, gave both a budget, the idea being that half the album would be by Sasha, and half by Esch. Wax Trax! then rejected Esch's work and sent Sasha back into the studio to finish the record. Which brings us to "Sex on the Flag." It is The. Best. Song. On. The. Album. (Don't believe me? The Tech critic Rick Roos said so, too, in his review.) And yet, it was not one of the four songs from the record released as a single. Seriously. Wax Trax! is one of my favorite indie record labels, but they really dropped the ball on this one. As for the video, I've linked to a boffo live version from 2004. Simply put, it rocks. Live in 2004 during the 20th Anniversary Tour.

It probably wasn't released because of backlash fears. You may remember that a lot of people thought Springsteen was urinating on the flag on the cover of Born in the USA. (Some people have way, way, way too much time on their hands.)

@teamfreak16 -- I don't know where people got that. I mean, it's not like the cover of Who's Next....

I actually don't remember that. I'll never be able to see that album cover the same way again now.

You are right. It rocks. Could have been a hit at least on alternative radio.
