What would be the ideal punishment for people who mistreat animals?

In your opinion, what kind of punishment (considering the level of violence, obviously) would be ideal for these worms (yeah, I hate that kind of "people"... with all my strength) that call themselves human beings?
I'm asking this because the common justice seems like it's never enough.

I would love to take people who mistreat animals and do like the ancient Romans did throw them in a pit with hungry lions.

Depending on what they had done to the animal is what would be done to them and I would be first in line to exact the punishment @TheInvisibleMan .

What I feel is that they should be abused like they do to animals. I know that probably will not help. I do know if jail will help them. They may become worse or life without parole and never parole them and put them in with those that hate the ones that abuse animals and then they will get what they deserve hopefully.
