Not yet improved in my English..

Philippines
October 17, 2017 2:40am CST
So, I was suggested a post that something to do about errors and bloopers on about the English language. As I read it somehow reminds me of my English class way back high school. Then back to my past language training class with intonation practices. But being on the call center I realized I'm not really that good in English in a short span. Though I could have tried to improve more myself, it's not in my passion now. I mean people in mylot doesn't care how you writes but others do try to practice their English here. Not sure how does that work though.

I don't mind if the grammar is wrong, as long as i can understand what they want to say. Yes, almost everybody here do not care if our English is right. So let's just enjoy writing here... even in crooked English sometimes...

Hello @magallon I've been writing here at mylot for a very long time and it's rare that I got people to criticize for my grammar. I hope people wouldn't mind if our english grammar here isn't that good.

@Letranknight2015 I haven't experienced being criticized here. I think mylotters understand that we are not real English speakers. Maybe misunderstood but not criticized.

I just write not so much mindful of my grammar. But lately, with the help of Grammarly, I get to know some common mistakes I do. Now, I can remember when to use this and that grammar on a sentence.

Sometimes, I don´t like Grammarly @SIMPLYD. It doesn´t accept my British words like favour, colour, favourite and so on. I am used to using British English. See? These 3 words are underlined by Grammarly. I just ignore it.

@Letranknight2015 Grammarly is an app which corrects your spelling or grammar. I am using that too when I am writing. Just like now.

I always bear in mind that everything is possible. Learning the language is complicated but we have still room for an improvement.

Hello @Shavkat I'm more interested in learning other Asian languages like mandarin or korea or japanese. My brother tried to learn Japanese but he didn't pass the language exam. Maybe I'll improved one of these days.

Best way is just reading, but could be when people call you out. The problem is want to punch them in the face when they do that. People should learn because telling you corporate America has a thing for perfect grammar. Not sure as to why, would rather be like you say. Doing your best, but miss that comma and you are fired or never hired. It is pretty dumb if you ask me. Not a very inclusive society when you make it like that.

Engaging in conversations is what really helps, and myLot allows us to do so. Writing, reading, writing, reading, I think improvement comes by itself. The only problem appears when most of the people you talk with are worse than you, therefore you don't learn the correct grammar but the mistakes they make. But it's good we have educational posts from time to time. After all, what really matters, is that we're able to understand each other and share opinions and knowledge.

@Letranknight2015 English is considered a global language so I would encourage people to learn it and speak it at home as well. i do not see a problem in that.

Hello @allen0187 It's definitely not our first language. Unfortunately, some people in our country were taught to speak English even in their home.

Knight, I take the grammar seriously because that makes the English correct. There are eight parts of speech; Noun - name (proper'Manila, common-city) Pronoun ; used in place of a noun (He, she, it) Robert is five years old. He loves to play. Verb - action word (eat, jump, study, sing) Adjective -describes the noun (beautiful city, playful, little boy) Adverb - modifies or qualifies (played gently, sang softly, slept soundly) Determiner - placed before the noun ( the sun, three stars, my pillow, a goat) Preposition - anything a rabbit does to a hill (rabbit goes on top/ over/ inside/ behind, under/around the hill) Conjunction - and, if, but Interjection - exclamation (Oh no!, Yes! Omigosh! Wow!) To begin with, follow the simple rule in subject-verb agreement. John is a writer. (singular) John and Rizza are writers. John is a good writer. (adjective used to describe the noun) John and Rizza are pretty good writers) Just keep your sentences simple.

@Letranknight2015 I am always for the enhancement of any skill that could be a tool for our happiness in life. You love communicating your ideas. You need to brush up with the lessons of long ago. In doing that, you could communicate effectively. Plus, knowledge shared is wisdom gained. Carry on, knight. You do our country proud.

as long as we can understand what is being conveyed, and we respond according to what we perceive, i think we can still be good English speakers. it is in one's prerogative if he or she wants to improve her or his skills in communicating in English.
