So I used to teach Kindergarten and since it’s a close knit community, parents of children whom I’ve taught are generally a kind of acquaintances that chats with me when we see each other anywhere in school or in the community.
The Kindergarten had a Festival of Talents yesterday and our folk dance contenders were the district level winners so they represented the district in the area level competition, they didn’t win in the area level, it’s all fine, we lose some and we win some. The funny thing that happened earlier at school before our flag ceremony was that I asked the little girl why they didn’t win, or if translated correctly I asked why they lost because it was her words, in Cebuano she said
“Mam, Mam, nanayaw mi gahapon, napildi lang mi.”
or “Mam, Mam, we danced yesterday, but we lost.”
so I also asked
“Ngano napildi man mo?”
or “Why did you lose?”
and she answered
“Kay naa man mi kontra!”
“ Because we had an opponent!”
And I couldn’t help myself, I laughed with the little girl’s mother and she was looking at us like what was so funny? It’s the truth! I miss being a kinder teacher...it brings back warm memories...

Ha ha, that is why Billy Joe Crawford is always awed when he interviewed kids in his Little Big Star. Its really funny, just enough to enlighten our day.

yeah, that’s what made it hilarious to me is that she was just sincere...

Nice logic though! She found a better way to say "They did better!".
