It's off to Owensboro for another show tonight, but this morning it's time for some bubblegum with your oatmeal or eggs. I'm looking at ten "tolerable" bubblegum songs (and some of these, especially later on in the countdown, I really like). Here's today's entry. #6: (Theme From) The Monkees - Monkees Ah, the Pre-Fab Four. Live-action Archies. And, as MTV pointed out when they ran the entire series in the early 90s, the precursor for music videos. A lot of the Monkees' material was fluff, despite having some pretty heavy-duty songwriters ("I'm a Believer" was written by Neil Diamond; "Daydream Believer" was by John Stewart), although a definite exception to the rule was the King-Goffin song "Pleasant Valley Sunday." But this was a Saturday morning kids' show, so the music had to fit. You just couldn't have Jimi Hendrix music for this audience (as they infamously found out when Hendrix opened -- and was soundly booed -- for the Monkees on a tour). But the Monkees were popular for a reason: this fluff was catchy. If you're of a certain age you know the chorus of this song ("Hey, hey, we're the Monkees, people say we're monkeying around") and will probably sing along. Enjoy this trip back in time. (Theme From) The Monkees Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart Recorded by the Monkees From The Monkees, 1967 Just look over your shoulder:

The Monkees were not literally a Saturday morning show. They were a prime time show Monday nights. The Monkees were my first big favorites and I watched them religiously and their albums were the first I ever bought. Hey hey I was just a kid! Remember Jack Nicholson had a hand in their movie "Head." Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork were serious musicians.

Yep. Watched it all the time when I was a kid. "Stepping Stone" is my favorite.
