They say that time flies when you're having fun, and I've definitely been having fun with this particular music series, a countdown of my favorite side projects. We are at #2: The Power Station.
Best known for their hits "Some Like it Hot" and "Get it On (Bang a Gong,)" The Power Station was a supergroup that was made up of vocalist Robert Palmer (R.I.P.) Duran Duran guitarist Andy Taylor, Duran Duran bassist John Taylor (no relation,) and Chic drummer Tony Thompson (R.I.P.,) formed in 1984. They were together one year, reemerging ten years later for two more years. They managed two studio and one live album, which produced a total of four singles.
At first, the band's idea, before Robert Palmer signed on, was to have a different vocalist on each song (the Taylor's approached talent such as Mick Jagger, Billy Idol, and Psychedelic Furs vocalist Richard Butler.)
Unlike Arcadia, Duran Duran's other side project, The Power Station rocked harder than Duran Duran, even with the suave Palmer as vocalist. In fact, Andy Taylor's guitar riffage was front and center, driving the band with lots of muscular power chords.
Oddly, the only time that Robert Palmer performed live with the group was on a 1985 Saturday Night Live appearance. Vocalist Michael Des Barres was brought on board for the subsequent tour.
Meanwhile, Andy Taylor and Tony Thompson played a major part of Palmer's popular album, Riptide. Eventually, John Taylor returned to Duran Duran, while Andy Taylor opted to pursue a solo career.
While I do love both of those hit songs, I've linked to my favorite tune from the self-titled album, "Go to Zero." I hope you dig it as much as I do.
Enjoy!

Michael Des Barres subbing for Robert Palmer is like me subbing for Linda Ronstadt. Loved "Some Like It Hot," but who doesn't.

Yeah, I thought he kind of wrecked their Live Aid performance.
