I Think We Have a Mouse

There is, perhaps, nothing more unsettling as hearing a strange crunching/rustling noise coming from the corner of your living room at 5:30 a.m. and assuming it is your cat moving around, only to realize that your cat is chilling out next to you under the coffee table.
It sounds like there may be a mouse in the wall, gnawing on something. I hope it's not chewing on wires. I have a huge fear of house fires, especially since my friend Wendy's house burned to the ground when I was 10.
I looked with a flashlight in the area of the room where the noise is coming from, but didn't see anything. I also hope that the critter making the noise is not actually inside my apartment.
I have lived here for nearly a decade and have never had to deal with mice. Squirrels running across the roof during the summer, yes, but not mice. Or rats. (I hope it's not a rat!)
I love how Lister is completely unfazed by this noise, though. He acts like he doesn't hear it at all. A hunter he is not...

I have never had mice here. We just had pest control come out and put out that gel stuff (for cockroaches, yuck) so it figures now we have acquired some other varmint.

i'm not sure if one of these 3 is a mouser yet..they're untried.
the last 2 that got in were swiftly dispatched by bandit-even when she was ill.

I don't think Lister would know what to do with a mouse if it ran up and bit him on the nose. He lets all kinds of critters just fly/stroll right in through the open balcony door.
I haven't heard the gnawing noise since I wrote this, so maybe it wasn't a mouse after all. No idea what it was.

I had mice around in the room where I had my washing machine. There's a sticky pad that catches them without poison. I caught a couple by placing them in the corner below the machine. After that it has happened a couple of times in the last 3 years and this pad has been always useful.

Why that mouse looks so nice in the picture but not in real life
Just can`t imagine them smashed up by powerful claws of Cats

I like mice and have rescued a few from the clutches of cats, but I like them when they are domesticated, or when they stay outside where they belong. Not when they go gnawing on stuff inside my home.

I haven't heard anything rustling around since that one morning, but if I hear it again I will try that.

I'm trying not to panic. I hope it was just a one time deal and that it doesn't become a problem. I don't think we have any holes in our walls (as far as I'm aware, anyway) so it shouldn't be able to get in...but I don't like the idea of something inside the wall gnawing on stuff.

@Courtlynn You would think that having a cat would eliminate this sort of problem.
