Does the rule that men pay for the first date still apply?

I have been with my partner some years now. I wonder if the rule that the men still pay for the first date still applies. I know some women who earn quite well, and some guys who are not making so much. It would look strange if a poorer guy paid for a date with a professional woman. Do women laugh it off? Do men follow the rule?

If you are asking me..I would say yes..I would not be impressed with a guy who expected me to pay for the date. I had a "relationship" like that once..where I ended up paying for everything..never again!

@ourlot Usually dates are kind of like a mutual type decision where people want to get together..I would expect him to pay.

If I asked a woman on a date then I will pay but if she asked me then I think she should pay? No?

Sometimes, I slip my husband some money, so he can puff his chest out at the register:)
