What is the best way to help people with develpmental disabilities? I mean things such as down syndrome, mental retardation, and even things like autism. I feel like we need to do more to help people who fall into this category. They need a lot of support, but don't they deserve to feel usefull and like they have a purpose in life?

Maybe volunteer at your local MRDD. If you already know a family dealing with this, help them out. Talk to them about their needs. A lot of people just need a little support and a little extra time with their special people. I would love for someone to become my son's friend. He is dependent on our family and really doesn't have friends to spend any time with. Just to watch a movie, take a walk, go out to eat, play a game. We are all he has.

I currently work for a company that does supported employment of people with disabilities. I am a job coach and work with people to get and keep jobs in the community. I've also worked with children with autism for years. I can imagine it is very hard for a parent of a child with a disability of any kind. I will keep you in my thoughts. You als might check with local or state special olympics.

Volunteer, and spread the word. Join groups that are ment to raise money, provide activities, educate the public. Everyone has a purpose in life. I know a few people with Down Syndrome, and they are so kind and sweet, they bring sunshine and love to everyone they meet...what better purpose in life can there be?
