Good evening, and welcome to yet another one of those old pop standards that I love the stuffing out of. This is my countdown of favorite pop songs, and that’s “pop” in the “traditional” sense. If you’ve been following along you’re not going to confuse anything on this countdown with Katy Perry! Meanwhile, here’s today’s song.
#3: Secret Love - Doris Day
And if you don’t like this song, well, que sera sera!
I think the first time I heard this song in my lifetime was when Freddy Fender covered it. That made my skin crawl. Then I heard Doris Day’s original, recorded for the film Calamity Jane, and Fender’s version made my skin crawl even more. (Not that I don’t like Freddy, but come on!)
Wow, what a song. And, as most good female pop singers did in that era, Day alternates between torch power and quiet beauty. There are a blue billion covers of this song out there, ranging from Sinatra to Lorrie Morgan, but there’s nothing like Doris Day’s version to me.
This song is such a standard that Homer & Jethro even spoofed it (“Yes, she is my secret love....I’ve been in love with her for years, I hope my wife don’t find it out”). Gorgeous, majestic, and timeless....all thanks to Doris Day.
Secret Love
Written by Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster
Recorded by Doris Day
Released as a single, 1953
(Also in the film Calamity Jane, 1953
Now I shout it from the highest hills:

Katy Perry in her wildest dreams could never be Doris. People forget how truly great she was.
