What do you know about Alaska? Alaska was “discovered” by a Russian naval Captain named Alexei Chirikov and his Danish partner, an explorer named Vitus Bering (Bering Strait) in 1741. Of course, there were already natives there, so they didn’t really “discover” Alaska. They just happened to land there. Eskimos, Aleuts and other Native Americans already lived there. Most persons who know anything about Alaska, know that in 1867, William Seward (Seward’s Folly) bought the land from the Russians for $7.2 million. That’s just 2 cents an acre. Alaska, of course, it the largest U.S. state and the capital is Juneau. However, the largest city in Alaska is Anchorage. I have been to the Anchorage airport, on my way home from Japan. I taught my grandson how to remember the state capitals of all the states. For Juneau, I told him. Juneau (did you know) that Eskimos live in Alaska? Juneau that? He never forgot the capital. The pop singer, Jewel was born in Alaska. One interesting point I found: Benny Benson, a 13-year old, designed the Alaskan state flag. Another interesting point I found. When the Aleutian Islands were invaded by Japan, in 1943, it was the first battle fought in America, since the Civil War. (1861-1865) 25% of oil that is produced in the U.S. comes from Alaska and about 88,000 barrels of oil per hour is moved 800 miles along the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. What else do you know about Alaska?
