You Can't Have It Both Ways

Today a connection of facebook was complaining about the unqualified people he was having to wade through in order to hire someone. He said, (in part) Why apply for a job when you have no experience what so ever? I mean nothing even in the ball park.... Your not going to get a 100k accounting job because being a cashier at McDonalds doesn't exactly qualify you. No one is going to magically hand you a better life because you clicked "submit resume". He went on to say something about the people not being "qualified" to bathe his dogs. (The person in question breeds and sells English bulldogs but that's a different can of worms.) In reply to his post I said, So, that means people should stop telling retail workers get "real jobs", right? Because REALLY. Every time customer service workers argue that we need a raise in minimum wage, just so we can earn a LIVING wage without having to work 2, 3 or more jobs then we are told by everyone on their high horses to "Just get a real job." Like it really is that easy. I mean, like the man said, " No one is going to magically hand you a better life because you clicked "submit resume" These real jobs ya'll want us poor people to go out and get are not being given to us. You can't have it both ways. Society can't tell us to get real jobs and at the same time not offer jobs to anyone without a 20 year degree. Locally, even the "entry level" jobs not only want a degree but 2 to 5 years of experience. Yeah....that's not ENTRY LEVEL is it? Nobody wants to train people anymore. The other answer often given is to go to school to get a degree and then that magical real job can be yours. But when you grow up in poverty you don't really have a chance to go to school. You have to go to work immediately to keep a roof over your head and food in your tummy. Not everyone is smart or athletic enough to get a free ride on a scholarship. And when you're dirt poor people aren't beating down your door to give you loans either. I work, in retail, with TONS of people who had to drop out of college because they couldn't afford it. Because they work retail. Where you don't get paid enough to live. But they can't get a better job without college and they can't afford college without a better job, so its kind of a catch 22. And this turned out to be a very long post that nobody will ever read. If you DID make it to the end, what do you think about my FB connections comment?

A college degree is no guarantee of a job. Besides, a lot of people are working in jobs that their college education did not prepared them for. With regards to the person who was hiring, I should think that people who genuinely love and care for dogs should be the main qualification.

Oh, I know this. The main college in our city is an art school. Only a select few get the good jobs. The rest of them work side by side with me. Only problem is, they get to claim a college education, which puts them above me in any stack of applications, whether the job has anything to do with the field of their degree.

@nonersays _Jobs are hard to come by. In the Philippines many professional teachers go abroad to work as DH (domestic helpers) which offer a higher pay compare to their salaries here.

Please stop the "no one will read" crap, we read you Nona. First I would have had to ask what type of degree does he have to run a puppy mill? Seriously? Animals do not need humans to breed. Many people like you do need a pay raise because you do work, the slackers are what give retail workers bad names. And I would rather hire someone with no experience so that I may train them to work lik I want things ran, not what they "think" I want done.

Well, I didn't get a pay raise this year. I lost over half my hours and $2.50 an hour. I still work just as hard and just as many people call me lazy and stupid even when I go above and beyond to help them. I'm about ready to start giving the bad customer service I'm being accused of.

I've been in retail all my life and I'm 60 ...I presently Manage a Hot Tub and Pool Store. Retail is a respectable and fulfilling profession , ...and yes,, It's a REAL job !!! Not everybody can afford a college or university education , and I certainly did not have such. In Ontario, Canada here, the minimum wage goes up to $ 15 an hour here, so that will help retail and food service workers although I also it will be difficult for employers to absorb as its a HUGE jump from where we were two years ago. Three cheers for Retail Workers !
