Why are us democrats so progressive?

The word "progressive" means to move forward,not backwards.
Like people like Wayne Johnson aka Shiraz aka JimW clone who'se crazy hatred make it an embarrasment when a foreigner asks "are all Americans such hateful right wing pigs"?
