Favorite "Heaven" Songs #4 - "Heaven and Hell"

We are talking about Heaven this time around, as I count down my favorite songs with "Heaven" in the title. We are at #4, and it shouldn't come as a surprise: "Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath. "Heaven and Hell" is the title track of Black Sabbath's 1980 album, the debut of Ronnie James Dio, who wrote the lyrics, as the band's vocalist. According to the late singer, the song is basically about each individual's choice to do either good or evil. As good as it is, "Heaven and Hell" was not released as a single, but was a part of Sabbath's live show for years, no matter who was the group's vocalist at any given time (Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen, Tony Martin, and even Judas Priest vocalist Rob Halford have did the song live while fronting the band; in Halford's case, a two night fill in stint.) The song has been covered several times, notably by Dream Theater, Stryper, Death Angel, and Coheed and Cambria. Way back in the early 80's, I did a metal night on the college radio station I was at. "Heaven and Hell" often made my playlist. I have linked to the album version. I hope you enjoy it. (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Is this after they kick Ozzy out of the band? It's a great song.

Wow, you used this instead of "Heaven on the 7th Floor." I'm just shocked. (I would use this over "Heaven on the 7th Floor" myself!) This got quite a bit of airplay in the early 80s, at least where I was.

@teamfreak16 — ah-ha, I knew it! It’s hard to believe that he went from that really good performance as Cousin Kevin in Tommy to such hogwash, isn’t it.....

I haven't heard of this track yet and definitely will be on my "songs to hear later" in my Youtube playlist. I have heard of Black Sabbath but never got to explore their tracks as well as their most recognized songs. Thank you for sharing. I bet this will be a great song to listen to especially those who are in to rock and roll music. :)

oh man..i can't tell you how many "ozzy vs dio" arguements i've gotten into with people over the years. both were equally good in my opinion.just 2 different styles is all. now, that other guy they got for awhile on the other hand.. this is one of my favorite non-ozzy sabbath songs tho.

I think Ronnie had one of the all- time great metal voices. Yet Ozzy is kind of perfect for the Black Sabbath sound, and he has sang some classic stuff.

Tony Martin was their second longest vocalist after Ozzy.

Dio is a better singer than Ozzy.

I'm glad you liked it. For the most part, I do these for my own amusement, so it's always nice when someone likes it.
