As the snow falls it’s time to close the door on one of the warmest voices in the world, the great Linda Ronstadt. I’ve been looking at my favorite songs that feature her as a backing vocalist. Here’s part two of the number one entry. #1a: Bed of Coals - Warren Zevon Earlier today I posted Linda’s vocals from “side one” of this album. Just flip that platter over and you’ll hear Linda again. This time she’s on another of Zevon’s personal songs, where he looked at the way his life had gone over the previous two to three years. It’s not a pretty sight, and he admitted that (“I’ve been sleeping on a bed of nails....I feel every needle that pierce through my heart”). In addition to Linda’s great harmonies on the chorus, this contains one of my favorite Zevon lines: “I’m too old to die young and too young to die now.” Thanks to @JohnRoberts for the inspiration for this series. Thanks to Linda Ronstadt for all the beautiful music she’s given the world. And thanks to you for reading. Bed of Coals Written by Warren Zevon and T-Bone Burnett Recorded by Warren Zevon From Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School, 1980 Through the smoke, behind the veil:

I am amazed at your knowledge and history of each artist. I love music just as much as you do, if not more... I just never researched it as extensively as you have...w

Thank you so much for the kind words. My boss had me picking out songs for our conference because he said (he thinks) I know so much about music. I told him I really don't, I just know what I know (in the words of Paul Simon). Zevon's my all-time favorite songwriter in rock and roll, and I've been a fan for 40 years (wow, Excitable Boy came out 40 years ago this month??). I just am blessed to remember a lot of what I read.
