This morning I got a phone call on a phone number that I have only had about a year and a half. This man introduced himself and he was very polite asking if I knew some distant cousin's. I do genealogical research and I was thinking and hoping that it might be another person doing the same. I replied , "Yes, but I do not talk to them much, sometimes I have contact with them online, but not often." I asked for his name and number and if I do get in contact with them at some point I would pass it on. He said that he had heard that my late uncle's step son had moved to California. Then I was pretty sure this was not about genealogy! Then he asked me could I get in touch with him today I said,"I just told you that I rarely communicate with him." And he said his goodbyes. Then I looked to see if I had his number and did not. Then I called his wife and got her voice mail and I left a message. Then I called him back to see what this was because it was an 800 number and I wrote down the company name. When he got on the line I asked him how he had found out about me as possibly someone that would know them and he told me from my late uncles obituary!!!!!!!!!! I was furious!!!!!!!!!!!! It get's worse, I checked the company's name and what they do.............. a bill collector! A bill collector looked on my uncle obituary for info to collect money!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah I have looked on obituaries for information, but only for genealogical information. Which I might add I do not get paid for!

I thought that was illegal to hassle relatives of people who owe money. It is at least in my state.

Wonder if it has to be illegal in my state, my cousin's state or the collectors state? I think I will call and find out tomorrow.

That's a pretty low thing to do. I'd make a complaint to the company.

That is what someone else said and I was going to check it out by phone yesterday but did not have time. I was unable to find anything online on Thursday. I will keep trying to check tho. Thanks for your opinion.

That seems sick to me that he did that and didn't even tell you who he was or why he was calling.
