We had a little chat going on here about the classic film The Blues Brothers yesterday after JJ (who got his screen name, Joliet Jake, from that movie). It inspired me (ahem) to list my ten favorite lines out of the movie. And yes, I’m posting this in “music” because this is a fabulous music-filled film. The music alone, with great acts like James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Ray Charles, make the movie worth seeing by itself. There’s also a lot of funny lines that have stuck with me over the years. Here’s the first one. #10: Our Lady of Blessed Acceleration, Don’t Fail Me Now! The plot of The Blues Brothers is two brothers are holding a reunion concert in order to raise money to save the school/orphanage they were raised in. Along the way they make a lot of enemies, from a poop-kicking country band to neo-Nazis to just about every law enforcement officer in the state of Illinois. After the concert they sneak out of the venue on their mission to get the money to the officials so the school/orphanage can stay open. It doesn’t take long for their enemies to realize they’re flying the coup, so one of the best pursuit scenes this side of Bullitt ensues. One of the “Good Ol’ Boys” (the country band they angered) takes a shot at them, blowing out their back window. That causes Elwood to utter this line.
