The one pie I really wanted to make this year was mincemeat. I usually buy the boxed kind, but wanted to try it from scratch this year. Needless to say, I never managed to make it. When I saw all the work involved in the making of homemade, it discouraged me. I guess I will stick to the boxed next year.

You can buy jars of fruitmince and make the pastry yourself - so much easier than making the mince.
I have only eaten the ready-made ones for the last few years, but I used to make my own. That way, I could use a very thin, short pastry and LOTS of fruitmince - the way I like it.

As a child my Mom made a meatless version. I liked it. Searching the internet for recipes, I notice there is ground beef in there! What the!! The mince pie I know (we called it mincemeat pie) had raisins and apples and sometimes nuts in it. Are you talking dessert or main dish?

I like mincemeat cookies, though I haven't made them in years because the jars of mincemeat got so expensive. I've never had mince pie. It's not a common dish in California.

When I was younger I really disliked the taste of mince pies, but as I have got older I now like nothing better than a cup of tea with a mince pie and cream.... Yum Yum...think I will head for the kitchen.
