The levels of poverty

My niece, my smiling baby, was taken to the doctor yesterday because she was running temperature. The doctor said she had a little malaria. Although it was Sunday, the mother, my sister-in-law, quickly looked for money and went to buy her drugs. If she had no money, what would she have done? People who have no money suffer a lot of things. Here in Lagos you see them on the streets all the time. It's humiliating. A young man once told me how he was suffering because he couldn't get a job and could not pay for house rent. His story made me cry. The levels of poverty in Nigeria is too much. I thank God I am not as poor as that. Although we are not rich we can still afford the basic necessities of living. I count myself fortunate to come daily to mylot and interact. Many persons cannot do so. Is there the same levels of poverty in your country?

Here, the poor peope can go to every community's Health center for free consultation and medicine. There are also public hospitals here. There are also a lot of poor people here who live in squatter's areas. Though, they can go to the public health center and hospitals for medication if they get sick.

@mydanods Though some are corrupt here, they still care for the poor people. It's sad that your government is different. They should have cared for the people.

@SIMPLYD They are interested in stealing the money in government purse. Recently, the government is going after those who steal government money. They call it anti-corruption. But even in that government some people have been caught and accused of stealing government money. People will never change.

Your government is really taking care of the poor. I wonder why African countries are different?

Yes, poverty is everywhere. Our homeless shelters are full. It's hard for people to find jobs, especially with so many jobs requiring a college education.

I thought the unemployment rate in USA is at its lowest ever? American jobs are hiring. That's what I read on the Internet.

@mydanods They are. That doesn't mean everyone has a job. You still need to qualify for one. People here need a work history of at least two years, unless they are just starting out in the work industry. Most kids get their first jobs in fast food. When I was fired from my job, I couldn't find a new one. Not because of my work history, which was excellent, but because I didn't have the necessary education. Even the job I was fired from had a college requirement and specific skills in order to be hired by that company. Sadly, I didn't have what they required. However, that's not why they fired me. And it wasn't because I wasn't doing my job well. I was. I was fired because the time I took with the customer was too long. I was a CSR - on the phones all day long.

When you hear stories about the developed world and how so many persons in Nigeria will give their right hands to migrate to those countries, you will think there is no poverty there. Thanks for reminding me of that.

That is so heartbreaking people have to live so poorly on the streets like that! It make me want to cry. I am so sorry to hear your niece has malaria that is scary even with medicine. I hope she will be okay and am glad her mother could afford the medicine for her!

She is now okay. If she had stopped smiling, we would have been alarmed. She is still smiling and having fun with adults.

I always think what could happen if the goods in the society will be divided between all and no one will ever have to suffer.

That would be very lovely. The idea has been proposed before but it was not implemented because economists said that it would make so many people lazy and the economy will go into recession of fail because so many people will not want to work again rather they will wait for the few to work and still earn a living from the sweat of others.

Jesus help and heal your family! Thank you Christ, amen. There is poverty as well as opulence here in Hawaii as well as everything in between. There is homeless locally, people needing all sort of help. Here in America, we have Aloha United Way to help the homeless, but many don't know about it. There is benefits.gov where you can find benefits like help with paying rent-Rental Subsidy, SNAP-Foodstamps for buying food, as well as other benefits to apply for. Maybe there is something that African govt. offers in social services too? Anyway, thank God for many blessings we all have. Amen. Hope your niece feels better and stays well.

We don't have social services in Nigeria. It's every man for himself. We usually rely on family network and friends when things are not going well.

@mydanods This is so sad, that people don't have social services for their citizens in Nigeria. I hope the United Nations can help solve this problem for Nigeria.

That is the truth. You also have low self-confidence. You walk as if you have a weight on your shoulders.
