Favorite "Queen" Songs #3 - "Sign of the Gypsy Queen"

It hasn't been exclusive, but classic rock has dominated my countdown of my favorite songs with "queen" in the title, and it continues to do so. We are at #3: "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" by April Wine. "Sign of the Gypsy Queen" was the second single released from April Wine's 1981 album, The Nature of the Beast, which was the pinnacle of the Canadian hard rock band's commercial success. It is the only song on the album not written by bandleader/vocalist/guitarist Myles Goodwyn (it is a cover of Lorence Hud's #16 Canadian hit, which outperformed April Wine's #40 Canadian placing, although Goodwyn and company's version did manage to reach #57 on the Billboard Hot 100.) The Nature of the Beast was a fairly huge album. On the promotional tour, I seem to remember the band selling out Denver's world famous concert venue, Red Rocks, two nights in a row (I was unable to get tickets, which is why I remember!) About a decade and a half or so later, we saw them in a Denver bar for ten bucks. A hit record makes all the difference in the world! I've linked to a live performance that shows off April Wine's three-headed lead guitar attack. It's arena rock at it's finest. Enjoy! (Nature of the gypsy queen info verified by Wikipedia)

It was one of the final cuts. I used her "I Might Have Been Queen" instead.

You might remember the big hit from the same album:
Time and time again I see A love that seemed strong Was not meant to be, Broken hearts don't always mend, Left too unsure, to try love again. Just between yo...

Oh, yeah, remember this one quite well!! It got a lot of airplay before the format shift. I enjoyed the song. Nice to hear it again.

I always thought that The Mission should have covered this. They could have goth'd it up a bit but easily kept the arena rock aspect.

I can see that. Not really a band that would've fit KROQ's format. They were more of an AOR band, but did get played on our local Top 40 AM at the time.
