A dog who saved his master during a home invasion returns home after surgery

Javier Mercado, 16, considers himself a very luck teenager after his two year old German Shepherd named Rex intervened on his behalf when two suspects enter his home in Des Moines Iowa to rob the home. The home invasion happened on February 21 when Rex in an act to protect his master bit one of the two suspects while they attempted to take out Javier who was hiding inside his room. One of the suspects shot Rex three times before he and his partner ran away from the home. Rex was taken to surgery at an animal hospital where he was able to survive his ordeal. The Mercado family set up a GoFundMe.com account to pay for the dog's surgery bill which was around $10,000 the next day. Due to the publicity this story received, the Mercado family received $59,000 dollars to assist them during their time of need. Javier's mother has decided to move to another home after the incident where her pet dog almost died at the hands of the two suspects who are still at large.
