Concert day!! At last!! My first time out of town since last November! Family illnesses and deaths will do that to you. After a hectic week at work and a long, sad winter I need this. And you need this: another song that was #1 in my lifetime. Going year by year, here's the pop song for 1969.
1969 (Pop): Everyday People - Sly & the Family Stone
This was a very topical song in 1969. Those of you who weren't around in 1968 should be thankful: two assassinations (Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy), anti-war protests, race riots, and general unrest in the US made it an ugly, ugly time.
So Sly and the Family Stone came along and preached love, tolerance, and acceptance in this classic song. "I am no better, and neither are you, we are the same whatever we do."
The message was accepted back then. Today? He'd probably be laughed out of town.
Sly's had a messy, messy life, including lawsuits, drug use, and homelessness. In recent years he seems to be getting things back together. Let's hope he can. And let's hope we can get our country back together, because as this song says, we've got to live together.

#1 for four weeks
And so on and so on:

He needs to be heard now more than ever, other than maybe at the time.
