I wouldn't mind. That is her civil rights. In our country, a woman has the right to retain her name even after marriage and not many people know about that. I retained mine and because people around me understands the law, as I do educate them about that, nobody holds a grudge against me.

I think that is pride. She is not submissive.

I don't think that pride at all. IN fact a woman in this country has the right to retain her name even after marriage. She's just exercising her legal rights.

@mydanods Isn't love more important than the surname? Why can't man respect what a woman wants? When a man loves his wife this things don't matter. We have a different culture and practices. It may matter in your country, but in this country, women are given that right and it should be respected especially by the man who claims to love his wife.

@toniganzon What about the husband's right that she bears his name? That right is above her own in this matter I think.

Here it is not a big deal. Women usually keep their maiden name.

Hi. If I have a choice I would do the same as your sister-in-law. Women are wired to change their last names when they get married. It is a matter of choice but it does not mean that she loves your brother less.

She loves him, Thats the main thing. Common law couples who never marry keep their own last names and live just as happily.

It depends... maybe she just said that because her husband's surname is ugly, or maybe she just mad to her husband family but marry her husband still because she loves him.

Well I've heard of this happening before. Couldn't she have a double barreled name and use her own and his.

if she told him about it ahead of time and he's amendable to it, then no problem. as far as i know, it's allowed in our country.

It is definitely allowed in our country as it is a woman's legal right to retain her name even after marriage.

It is really a choice but sometimes it depends upon the reason and motives on why you choose it...it was just so sad on our part bec. The motive of the girl was not so nice....but still, its her decision...
