They say that when one door closes, another door opens, and I'm kicking the damn thing down with the theme of my latest series, a countdown of my favorite songs with "door" in the title. We start at #10: "Jail Guitar Doors" by The Clash.
From the US release of their 1979 debut album, The Clash, "Jail Guitar Doors" was originally released as the B-Side of their 1978 single, "Clash City Rockers." The origin of "Jail Guitar Doors" can be traced to vocalist/guitarist Joe Strummer's pre-Clash band, The 101ers, and their song "Lonely Mother's Son," which shares the same chorus. The lyrics make reference to MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, Fleetwood Mac founding guitarist Peter Green, and Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.
British protest singer Billy Bragg used the title, "Jail Guitar Doors" as the name of his charity, which supplies musical instruments to prison inmates. An independent US chapter was started by Bragg and Wayne Kramer in 2009.
