Favorite "Color" Bands #10 - Black Uhuru

Given my love of reggae, it should come as no surprise that my favorite reggae band just happens to have a name that fits right in with my countdown of my favorite bands with a color in their name. We are at #10: Black Uhuru.
Vocalist Duckie Simpson has been the only constant member of Jamaican band Black Uhuru (Uhuru being the Swahili word for freedom,) but despite the many lineup changes, the group has released a hell of a lot of great reggae since they formed in 1972.
The band's glory days came in the 1980's, with their classic lineup of Simpson, lead vocalist Michael Rose, vocalist Puma Jones (R.I.P.,) drummer Sly Dunbar, and bassist Robbie Shakespeare (in fact, it was Sly and Robbie's production skills that was a factor in helping make the group so popular during that decade .)
In fact, it was this lineup that won the first ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album with their 1984 album, Anthem.
Black Uhuru has always incorporated a message into their roots reggae sound, whether that message has been about equal rights, unity, or a pro-marijuana stance. They also are known for doubling your listening pleasure with the practice of releasing a dub version of each roots album.
Simply put, they are my favorite reggae act. Hope you enjoy the link that I've provided.

"Reggae's expanding with Sly and Robbie" (Tom Tom Club)
In fact, the first time I heard of Black Uhuru was in an interview with Chris and Tina. Definitely classic reggae!

Sly and Robbie are awesome. They have done some incredible dub stuff, and their work with non-reggae artists like Grace Jones is top-notch.

I never heard of these guys. Thanks for showing. Nice funkiness to their reggae sound. One thing about reggae is to many bands just do the generic reggae sound. Why I like when punk does Ska because they at least add some horns and percussions to mix up the sound.
Also Aggrolites are coming out with a new one soon and they say they are going back to that OG dirty reggae sound. Can't wait to hear that.
