Well, what do you know, look who's showing up yet again in another one of my countdowns. Gee, didn't I just use this guy yesterday? Yes, I did, in the "big" countdown. Now he's back with a "little" song that shows up on my list of favorite songs with the word "little" in the title. Here he is.
#3: Two Little Hitlers - Elvis Costello
Selfish pleasure, yeah, with the one I love
(Nick Lowe, "Little Hitler")
Two little Hitlers who'll fight it out until one little Hitler does the other one's will
(Elvis Costello, "Two Little Hitlers")
Coincidence? Nick and Elvis are good friends, so it's possible that this song about selfish manipulative love is a nod to the Nick Lowe song.
One of the best things about Elvis Costello is his ability to write incredibly witty lyrics. That's on full display here: "It's all so calculated, she's got a calculator" is one of my favorite Costello quips in a song.
And that opening line, "why are we racing to be so old?" Wow. (He changed that line in the live clip linked below.) Trying to have one's way in a relationship ("you call selective dating for some effective mating") will do that to a person.
What a gem from Mr. MacManus.
