It's the end of another countdown, this one looking at my favorite songs that have "little" in the title. This was a companion to the "big songs" (songs with "big" in the title) countdown. Here's the biggest "little" song on my list. #1: Life Has Its Little Ups and Downs - Charlie Rich From the "understand your man" department, Margaret Ann Rich wrote this song for her husband to sing. And sing it, he did. Man, what a delivery. According to Picky Wedia, Rolling Stone said this was good enough and diverse enough to make the country, pop, and R&B charts. Well...it bombed as a single. But as a song, it's a masterpiece. Charlie Rich sang this song of the trials and tribulations of married life with ultimate conviction. Charlie and Margaret Ann were married for 43 years at the time of his death from a pulmonary embolism in 1995. Here he talks about how he wants to give his wife things, but the monetary problems ("don't know how to tell her that I didn't get that raise in pay today") mean that "the new house plans we've had so long I guess will gather dust another year." Love conquers all, though: "no one grabs the brass ring every time, but she don't mind. She wears a gold ring on her finger, and it's mine." This is one of the greatest love songs ever, doubled by Rich's soulful delivery. He sure grabbed the brass ring with this. Thanks for reading. Life Has Its Little Ups and Downs Written by Margaret Ann Rich Recorded by Charlie Rich From The Fabulous Charlie Rich, 1969 But she don't mind:

I am not familiar with this tune. I guess it's a "down" for me.

Sorry that it's taken me a "little" while to get to this. What a pretty song! We've been alternating between Sports Talk Radio (me) and Modern Country (her.) Needless to say, that station doesn't play good stuff like this. Have you heard that new "Jack and Diane" ripoff? They play the crap out of that. Ugh.
