"Skeletons in the closet" ..
Okay, let me explain what this idiom or expression mean for the sake of a few who don't know.. It means family secrets that are mostly shameful or embarrassing , therefore the family keep it guarded and never want to talk about it... Hence the expression "Skeletons in the closet"...
In one of my previous discussions I changed it to "cupboards" instead of closet because I was joking with my husband that I personally only have one skeleton that I kept in the cupboard not in the closet, because it's a "loner" LOL and it hates company .... But now, it's out with me ...
Few years ago, I have discovered that my families on both side have skeletons in their closets .. lol .. some were tragic, some were hilarious but they must have felt otherwise because they don't have humour in their bones like I do ..
...ahahah!! ..
I remember when I was very young, my mother told few things that didn't make sense at that time.. I realised that it was the "skeleton" in her closet that bothered her for years and she found the courage to release it by telling me.. There is no need for me to tell other members of the family about it.. The most important thing is that, my mother have the courage to ignore the fear and opened up ....
So yeah, the "skeletons" are not in your closet . They are inside your mind. Do not be afraid to open up your mind and release them .. I don't mean that you have to tell all the embarrassing and shameful secrets of your family, but don't let those "skeletons" define you...
To those who thought that I really have real skeleton in my cupboard as a hobby, no I don't .. Although I would love to, but my husband said "NO!".
..
Anyway, amazing how people come up with words to express something.. and if it's the first time we hear about it, it is confusing ..
But they give us something to think about ...
Are there any sayings or expressions that got your mind boggled?.. I have quite a few that I can think of .. A few, traumatised me , some are hilarious but most are enlightening ...
Thanks for reading
Bess..

Oh so true - I'm happy your mom was able to talk about the issue. Talking about things lets you live more freely

I'm glad for her too .. What a shame though that she didn't have a friend or one of her sisters that she could have trusted so she didn't have to keep things to herself for years ..

@epiffanie And I think some things we consider as embarrassing in those old days has become ordinary already in the present time.

I agree .. I don't think anyone in this world can keep their "secret' .. and sometimes, those embarrassing secrets are not really that embarrassing ... but they suffered for years because of fear of what others would think of them ..

@epiffanie
When I was younger I went to a therapist and my family said whatever our secrets are stay in the family. I did not agree. I needed to talk to someone because my family would not talk. So, I went outside the family and glad I did.

I believe that way too .. to talk about what bothers us should be encouraged ..

When you're ready to unload to someone, just make sure it's someone you can truly trust who won't twist the story .. because betrayal is the worst thing you can ever experience ...
