She Grabbed My Hair In The Store!

You're in My Personal Space
United States

I have long hair that i keep in a braid that goes down past my waist. When i go out i do get a lot of complements on it which i think is very nice. It's kind of funny that i tend to get asked the same questions: Do you braid it yourself? (yes) How long does it take to wash? (a few minutes) How long to dry? (3 hours air dry)... Anyway that's the most asked. But then this happened today. I was shopping in a store when an older lady comes up from behind me , and takes a hold of my braid as she gives me a complement! I mean, yes thank you, but you're totally invading my personal space. How do you think she would have reacted if i went up behind her and did the same? How would you handle this? I'm sure she meant no harm, but really? This has happened a few times before with different people and i don't know what to come back. It's like touching a pregnant womans stomach, you just don't unless invited. **My photo of a vulture for article attention***

I know your pain, it happens to me also. What shampoo do you use? What conditioner do you use? Do you use products in it? When was the last time you cut your hippie hair? When are you putting on a skirt to go with your hippie hair? Hos long you been a hippie?

@Debscrochet so you don't see yourself cutting it and having shorter hair?

Uggghhh I hate when people touch my hair. I have long hair as well and it is very thick and a pretty color so people always go after it. And I'm always so awkward, I'm just like "uhhh thanks? I grew it myself" While slowly taking my lock of hair from hands.

Yes it's like i want to say something along the lines of "I know you mean well, and i don't want to hurt your feelings and come off as a total "B" but that makes me feel uneasy"

@Debscrochet I just always give a snarky remark, most don't catch it. It is why I mostly wear my hair up when I go to any stores. If I go to the mall or out to eat, I feel a little safer. But those old ladies at the grocery store, oof.

i thought a bird grabbed your hair. i guess i would be surprised and uncomfortable. it's good that you braid it so it doesn't get caught in anything.

@Debscrochet do you blow dry it during the colder months?

@hereandthere No, i live in a warm climate-Florida so it's hardly cold. I find blow drying can also damage the hair

I also have a long hair, but people don't touch it (thankfully). Maybe they can feel that touching my hair is not welcomed.

My sister has faced it a lot of times before her marriage. Her braid was very thick. She got irritated in answering the same questions. She always used to tell us that she would like to cut her hair short. But, even the salons were not ready to cut her hair. Her husband fell in love with her seeing her hair. Now, they're a happily married couple.
