My countdown "of" my favorite bands with "of" in their name rolls on. We have reached #7: Course of Empire. Percussion-heavy Course of Empire was a post punk, post industrial alternative band that formed in Dallas in 1988, lasting for ten years. The group was fronted by Vaughn Stevenson, and featured two drummers. In fact, the band was so into percussion that early on, they were known for placing drums in the audience so that the crowd could play along. This practice ceased after the drums were used less for playing, instead becoming launched as flying projectiles. Taking their name from a series of paintings by artist Thomas Cole, the members of Course of Empire were film students at Southern Methodist University. Sadly, the band managed to release just three albums during their existence. Notably, former Pearl Jam drummer Dave Abbruzzese spent a brief stint in the band. Not heard this one before. Couldn't make out a second drum.

The drummers played concurrently to get a heavier sound.

Not many are. They have a cult following at best.

They only have a cult following. Another band that I discovered because I bought the CD unheard just because I liked the cover art. Back in the 90's.
