I understand that this Play it Again, Sam music series might be difficult to follow. It's quite simple, really. It's a two part discussion. The "a" portion is an original song, followed by the "b" portion, a cover of that song. We are at #47a: "2000 Light Years from Home" by The Rolling Stones.
Like many bands in the 60's, The Rolling Stones went through a psychedelic period, which resulted in their 1967 album, Their Satanic Majesties Request, which the band produced themselves. Whether that was a good idea or not is up to you, but the band themselves have declared it a mistake. "2000 Light Years from Home" is one of just three songs from the record that Keith Richards has said weren't "utter crap," so I'm going with Keith on this.
The lyrics were supposedly written by Mick Jagger while he was in prison on drug charges. It was released as the B-Side of their single, "She's a Rainbow," but charted in Germany, where it reached #5. Despite it's B-Side status, The Stones often performed the trippy tune in concert (in fact, for awhile, it was the only song from the album that the group would play live.)
If you have seen the movie, Men in Black 3, you've heard this, and it has been covered numerous times, which I'll get to in the "b" portion.
As many beloved songs that The Stones have released over the decades, "2000 Light Years from Home" is my favorite. What can I say? I love psychedelic music!
(Why it's sometimes a bad idea to self-produce an album info verified by Wikipedia)

That's what makes it so cool. It doesn't sound like them.

At least you have it. That's better than not having it!
