Give flowers but give live flowers, in a pot, so they will last.

We received flowers in the mail via post, and they were spectacular and they lasted a few weeks but in spite of our efforts to keep them alive, they eventually thinned out terribly and we had to do what we always have to do with flowers in a vase, press a few and discard the dead and dry ones. I gave it some good thought and came to the conclusion that flowers or rather any house plant, are alive in a pot and can be taken care of all year long or for many years to come. One example of a flower that is worth buying in a pot, is the African Violet, such delicate flowers, with leaves that look like they were made of velvet. The deep purple color of these wonderful flowering plants are a delight to the eyes. My mother when she was alive, several years ago, had about half a dozen African Violets and they remained in the house, under indirect light near a window facing north. I can see the beauty in a bouquet of flowers but it just doesn't last. They are only there for a few days or weeks at best. I have to admit they were much appreciated and my wife took several photos of them while they were in full bloom. The price to give flowers like these is nearly a hundred or more dollars, US. The price for a rose bush is only about 15 dollars, US. The only difference is, the roses must survive the outdoors and transplant shock occurs in many cases. It is required that the soil be soft and hold moisture, and the rose is given extra nutrients from special flower formula added to the water and then it's a matter of proper placement. The rose needs sunlight to thrive and if you plant them in an area of the yard that mainly is shaded under the trees that hover above, maybe the rose will survive but maybe it will not exactly thrive. The sentiment behind giving flowers, cut from the wild, goes back to the olden days. We give flowers for birthdays, weddings, holidays and funerals. We give them to the ones we love. Next time you get the opportunity to give flowers, think about giving living flowers. There are many to choose from. From living flowers, you can take cuttings from many of them that can actually be used to grow entirely new plants. If you look below in the comments section I have added a link to a YouTube tutorial about taking cuttings from a fig tree then planting them in a pot to grow a new fig tree plant from that cutting. Yes, this is an ancient technique, that many of us today may not know about. I certainly learned a thing or two today from watching that YouTube video about cuttings from a Fig tree, and reading about how to take cuttings from certain plants to grow new plants from them. It's a great way to add plants to your garden and have more food also to eat. It's a win-win.
Taking cuttings from your favorite plants is one of the quickest -- and easiest -- ways to make more plants for free.

I prefer living plants to buying a bouquet and putting it in a vase. The article is very interesting.

I love plants. My garden is entirely made from cuttings and seedlings. I will check on cuttings from a fig tree although I wouldn´t know where to plant it.

Start it in a pot in the house or on the porch until it takes root and by the time summer gets here, put it out in the sun and after it gets going transplant it in the ground in a sunny spot.

@marguicha It doesn't grow that high, about 10 feet or so, and wide, it only grows about 5 to 6 feet wide, at least the one in our back yard is and it is over 60 years old or older.

@lookatdesktop Yeah. When we have many kinds of flowers in pots, or in the garden. We can also make a bouquet at the same time. That's great.

The flowers can be clipped off from a rose bush to make a bouquet and not kill the rose bush by doing it. I mean, flower cuttings are a very colorful and beautiful thing to look at and enjoy. Many people in old folk homes or hospitals need a bit more consieration by having flowers to cheer them up don't you agree?

I told my husband years ago when we started dating that I never wanted to receive any cut flowers for that reason. They Die. If he was going to give me flowers I wanted the potted ones.

I know how you feel about that. I enjoy looking at cut flowers and flower arrangements but I like living plants that much more.
