So I'm in the habit of routinely cleaning out my "darling's" litter pan of his contributions to the world every single day. Then once a week I thoroughly clean out the pan, wash it out and put nice fresh new clean litter in it. And what happens? Yep, my cat has to make a new contribution, usually #2, seconds after I cleaned it out. He couldn't have done that BEFORE I cleaned it out...oh, no. I guess he feels the need to "initiate" the pan. Anyone else's cat do the same thing?

I've had several that stood and watched, waiting me to finish so they could 'christen' it

LOL. Yes! they seem to want to be the first to use the new box and mark it as their own.
