How Do You Know?

I saw a tweet a month ago that spurred me on to finish my novel. It was an agent accepting submissions for the month of April. Though I didn't get my story done in time, the tweet itself got me going.
I have finished working on the novel.... I think. I have printed it out and gave it to a friend to read over.... reluctantly. I am not really sure it's ready. I am questioning myself, questioning some things in the story. I am sure my friend will tell me what she sees wrong with it, if anything. I asked her to be honest.
How do you know when your book is done?

Congrats on finishing your novel! 
With my first novel, I just "knew" when it was finished. And then I took a break for a few months and went back and did rewrites. Turned out it wasn't really finished at all!

I have a book published and I don't think it is even done. I believe that this book if I ever become famous, will help show people that we all start from somewhere. I have about 3 books I am working on that are at least 50% done. I just haven't been able to really complete them. Hopefully, I can get that going!

It is a feeling of great satisfaction. You just KNOW its done. It took me seven years to write a poem once. I began writing it simply enough in 1997, then I would edit and rewrite. Just when I thought I was finished, I would receive new insight that I had to add to the poem. So I rewrote it and edited it some more. This continued until the summer of 2004 when, to my great satisfaction, I had nothing more to add. It was complete.
