This is a continuance from my previous post.
Some members of the audience were picked to ask their own questions. One question in particular was one we all cheered and clapped for which was asked by an 11 year old boy. He asked "What would you say to those who believe the moon landing was faked?" Charlie and Gerry chuckled quite a bit because no doubt they have heard of all the conspiracies surrounding this. They both explained well why this wasn't something that was faked. Some of their answers were:
"It would take more effort to fake a moon landing than actually doing it."
"If we faked it, why would we fake it so many times?"
"You can't keep a secret between a couple of people let alone trying to keep thousands of people keeping a secret." ( meaning if it was faked, someone within that career would have said something by now )
"The whole world was watching and there was no way that the Russians would ever have allowed them to get away with a fake moon landing."
Charlie chuckled again and spoke about how the world is actually round and not flat.
Another question was asked but unfortunately I have forgotten what it was but I remember the story Charlie told which amused me. Thought I would share it. Charlie said that during Apollo 16 one of his crew members ( Ken Mattingly ) had lost his wedding ring. They spent a long time searching the space craft without any success. Later on during a space walk ( leaving the capsule to go out into space ) with Ken outside the capsule and Charlie watching him, Charlie saw the wedding ring float passed him. He reached out to grab but couldn't catch up to it. As Charlie watched the ring float out of the capsule, he saw it hit Ken's helmet which then made the ring ricochet back into the capsule for Charlie to catch it.
I thought it was extremely lucky that the ring didn't go straight out into space to be lost forever.
At the end, a selfie was taken of those who were on stage along with everyone in the audience. I can see myself in the audience actually. Not clearly but I am there. At the back on the left side wearing a pink jacket. But to name those who are right in front of the photo, left to right are Keith Haviland ( one of the producers for the documentary ), Charlie Duke, Charlie's wife Dorothy, Gerry Griffin and the woman in front is Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith.
I had a really great time and hope for another event to take place similar to this. I love watching documentaries about space but to actually see and hear real astronauts speak their stories is just incredible.
