Play it Again, Sam #23b - "The Hunt"

We're tackling a rather serious subject on this morning's Play it Again, Sam: heroin. We are at #23b, the "cover" portion: Selpultura's cover of New Model Army's "The Hunt." For the uninitiated, Sepultura is a Brazilian thrash metal band that formed in Belo Horizonte in 1984, and, despite the departure of founders Max and Igor Cavalera, are still going strong. Unfortunately, the band is not really well known outside of the metal community, but take my word for it: they are very good at what they do. The band's cover of "The Hunt," a tune about a group of vigilantes that go after a heroin dealer, appears on their classic 1993 album, Chaos A.D (classic among metalheads, anyway!) Drummer/percussionist Igor Cavalera is a huge New Model Army fan, and insisted that the cover of "The Hunt" be included on the album (the band recorded four covers of different songs during the sessions, three of which were used on a later EP.) Bassist Paolo Jr. is said to have joked that the royalties should be used to provide dentures for New Model Army vocalist/guitarist Justin Sullivan, who, to put it kindly, is missing a few teeth! Sepultura stayed fairly true to the original version, although they did metal it up quite a bit to fit their style. An interesting, fantastic cover of a very serious New Model Army classic.
