As most people already know, when meeting a new dog in public who you want to pet, it's a good idea to ask the dog's owner for permission first. But it's also important to ask the dog if they want to be petted. You do this by presenting your hand for the dog to sniff. If they lick or nuzzle you in response, go right ahead. If not, don't. The same goes for cats, though they can be a bit harder to convince. The trick is to not approach them. Instead, allow them to approach you.
