England won today in the World Cup! We English fans had given up on our national team after a long run of poor tournament performances and it was noticeable how few people were wearing England shirts and displaying flags on the streets in England this week. Being in the European Union erodes your sovereignty and the English flag has somehow become shameful. There will be a few more flags next match on Sunday after a good performance against Tunisia. After the slaughter on the Tunisian beach two years ago it felt good to beat them. The difference this year is EngLand have a genuine goalscorer, Harry Kane, two footed but , more importantly, knows where to be in the box to score, what the best goalscorers have. He scored early and thats what you need to get your World Cup going. Tunisia got a questionable penalty from the Video Review system but that was their only threat as England kept pushing and pushing in the heat and Kane nodded home in the 92nd minute to win. What I liked about England tonight is they did not panic and kept to the plan. Belgium stuffed Panama 3-0 in the other game in the group and checked their tax status at the same time. Belgium scored a record 43 goals in qualification last year and could get to the final here in Russia. They are packed with quality. The other match was a dull game between Sweden and South Korea , again a penalty given by the VAR system, the 6th penalty in 14 games. Tomorrow is the final group first games as we go into the second rotation, Russia back on the pitch.
