Nature Always Amazes Me

Prickly Lettuce Growing in Street beside Curb

As I was out taking pictures of flowers in my neighborhood, I noticed this prickly lettuce weed growing in the street as I walked by. It can't have any deep roots in just the dirt that the wind has blown against the curb. Yet it seems to thrive. I guess some plants just don't need a lot of nourishment to produce and reproduce. I guess some people are like that, too. They don't have a lot of advantages or an ideal environment, but they still manage to grow in spite of the odds against them. Have you seen plants growing in extremely adverse conditions? How about people?

Hi, I don't have grading I wish I had, and with some techniques I believe it possible to have plants growing even on adverse conditions

You are right. But no one used any techniques on this plant. It just sprouted and grew all by itself.

Yes, the Banyan and peepal tree they start their lives mostly on a wall or on some terrace where birds excrete! They have to face many hardships in the initial stages! Thanks!

As Nietzsche said, "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger." There are so many inspiring stories about people with great disadvantage surmounting difficult life situations.

Yes, those stories are there and I know a lot of them that inspire me. But not everyone who survives adversity gets stronger. Some are crushed by it. The difference is in how we respond to that adversity.

Sometimes I tend to think that some plants grow better on their own. No human interruption

@AKRao24 This is especially true of weeds. They don't need any care and often thrive even with little water or soil.

Yes, nature is truly tenacious. Seeds can germinate in the most impossible places, sometimes even splitting rocks as they grow. And yes, I know a few people like that, too.

I have seen them grow in small puddles on the surfaces of rocks at the park that are only a fraction of an inch deep.

I see it all the time sometimes in my garden as well. I have this creeper that I try to get rid of but it stays put.It may give out pretty flowers but it is invasive and can spread all over. And talking about people all I could say is that even the mediocre have happiness surrounding them.

You said it, my dear friend. Some plants have strong vitality. They can also grow in a very bad environment. Some people are like this. They are very brave to face life.

Nigella, Burr Clover, Gazanias
Grassy weeds are the worst and hardest to get out. As for the sticker plants, do you mean this burr clover in the bottom left side of the photo that has the little yellow flowers that turn into burrs? My yard is full of it. I spent a lot of time pulling some out last weekend.

Yes, what we call weeds seem to grow robustly anywhere. Also I see many of my students who are doing better than those who come from more priveligedbackgrounds

Dr. Ben Carson here in the USA, now in the President's cabinet, was raised by a single mom in a minority community, but she was strict and insisted he pay attention to his education, even though she didn't have much education herself. She knew he needed that education if he were ever to make anything of himself. He grew up to be a prominent pediatric brain surgeon.
