I love London.
I don't know if it's in my genes to love it so, or if it's just one of those things. All my grandparents and most of my great-grandparents are London born and bred. Various lopsided branches can claim London as their home of choice for a few hundred years.
If I had a Bucket List one of the things listed would be to spend an entire day just travelling on the tube. For somebody who likes people-watching, it's the perfect activity, full as it is with tourists from all four corners of the world, commuters, eccentric city-dwellers, dating couples, harassed parents and screaming toddlers.
I couldn't live there, not in the busy-ness of the city centre, but a quiet street in the suburbs, a short walk from the nearest tube station and only a twenty-five minute journey into London's West End, would be perfect.
If I were a millionaire.
My enjoyment of London reveals a flaw in my introversion. I don't like the hustle and bustle of crowds, nor do I enjoy the noise of busy places. But I can cope with London. I'm anonymous, an easily forgotten face in the crowd listening in to other people's conversations.
So, we went to London at the weekend, to a comedy show in Shaftsbury Avenue, deep in the heart of Theatre Land. Happy hour cocktails and lots of laughter followed by a slow walk back to the tube, taking in the sights and sounds of Leicester Square and Chinatown.
There's an M&Ms World shop in London. And it's ENORMOUS! And it was still open - and exceedingly busy - at nearly midnight. It was also highly expensive, although the tourists didn't seem to mind the prices.
It was lovely to get away for a night. Husband chose a perfect little hotel, which came with free parking and an amazingly yummy breakfast. We meandered along country lanes on the drive home, visiting villages where some of my ancestors were born and raised. Very cold beer in the hot sunshine was a gorgeous way to end our weekend shenanigans.

It does sound like you really like London. I am delighted that your husband booked a lovely little hotel with free parking. It was wonderful you visited the countryside where your ancestors used to live. I used to live in Kent and at one time I worked in an office in London. Yes, much about London is expensive. I remember when a day pass cost £5.00 for all transports in zones from the capital out to the further away zone. Now I live in North Somerset I visit London when I must get visas or we are going to one of the London Airports. I love the River Thames, Tower Bridge and Kew Gardens.

What I most like about London is that everything you need is on the doorstep. I live in a small town deep in the countryside, with stupid bus times and a High Street which is gradually closing! Going to London makes me feel like a child at Christmas; all wide-eyed and in awe.

@Poppylicious I agree London has loads of shops of all different kinds. However it also has parks with relaxing spaces. There are lots of buses and the underground area has tube trains. On 31st December 1999 I went to London and overlooked the River Thames with thousands of other people. There were fireworks in the sky. Wow. I know what you mean about London making you feel like a child at Christmas.

It does sound like you had a lovely time. I'm sure one could visit London a thousand times over and still not see and do all there is to see and do.
I prefer keeping to myself, a peaceful, quiet area suits me best. However, on the occasions I do make into the city I enjoy it.
It's good to come back home again though.

Yes, I think it's the subconscious knowing that it isn't permanent which allows me to enjoy it.

Sounds like you had a good time there. I do the same every now and then, go to some low end markets, listening to people squabbling, watching them perhaps living simpler lives than I do (just perhaps...). Bliss!
