But I have a small child. I'd like a medium sized one. What kind of dog would you reccomend? Thanks!

If you don't mind a dog that likes to bark - Dachshunds are great with kids. We have two and they are very patient with children. They even tolerate being disturbed while eating - most breeds will not as far as I understand. Kids love sausage dogs because they really do look quite comical. They are great walking partners and they are protective and loyal - even if they are small:) Dachshunds love cuddling and kids just love cuddling them:) Give them half a chance and a Dachshund will hop into your bed; snuggle under the covers and make the cutest noises. I always love how little children point and giggle at my dogs - they really seem to love them - and vice versa. Of course they won't actually provide protection - more like a warning if something is wrong. I think shorthaired are best because they have very little grooming requirements.

Thanks! A Dachshund sounds like a great idea. They are super cute and not alot of grooming is a plus.

labradors are the best ones.they are best around children and are very well mannered.and they are not too very aggresive or anything. they have short coats too and hence shed less hair.you could go for dashunds too.but do they fall into medium sided category? i am not sure about that.

labradors would they be considered a medium dog? I would consider them large... but my dog is only 30 lbs. How big is your labs?

If you don't live somewhere where there's a lot of laws against them, I would go with an American Pit Bull Terrier. They are super awesome with children, don't need much grooming & the ones I have don't even bark much.

We have a Sheltie (Shetland Sheepdog). We have 2 kids ages 2 and 4. We got out dog when my youngest was only 8 months old. She has been great with the kids from day one. Shelties are herding dogs, so she tends to "tattle" on the kids if she thinks they are doing something wrong. I also run an in-home daycare and have never had any problems (except when she is trying to protect the kids from their parents and barks!!) She has never nipped or anything at anyone.

Labs are well natured dogs but are often quite rambunctious for the first 1 1/2 yrs. Normally the larger dogs seem to be more gentle. Stay away from Cocker Spaniels, very moody and often tend to bite. Sharpei's can be very sweet, but again they're also known to be moody.

I suggest doing this... Go to your local pound, and adopt a dog. It is a good feeling knowing that you save the little fella. We did that and she is the best dog that anyone could ask for. People ask what kinda dog she is and the only answer I can give here is she is a mutt. I can tell you this for sure. You do not want an America Eskimo. My parents have one of them and they are easily the most high stung dog that I have ever seen. She barks at everything, runs around like a crazed animal and whlie she was a puppy she ate everything in site.
