Different dogs, different relations.

I once had a dog that came to my life when she was 4. She had been Tomás (my grandson that died of cancer) dog. When he was ill, his parents wanted to leave Misty in the streets as they could not have a dog with extra bugs.
I took her and she became my dog.
We always had a relation of friendship. She was an adult dog, she had had puppies once and she was tender with kids. She followed me wherever I went and never needed a collar. She could even cross the streets at my side and I knew she would behave. She was the most incredible dog I have ever met and I was devastated when she died of old age.
Luna is my second dog, after a long time alone. But up to now, we have not a friendship relation. She is my child and I am her mummy. I don´t know how things will develop later on. Meanwhile, she is my child.

Oh yeah, Tristan and I were like that. We never really saw eye to eye until he was 5. To be fair, I was working all the time. I was probably not giving him the attention he deserved. After a lifestyle change and started taking him with me on more adventures we became best buddies.
Some dogs that are high energy really take a while to get that kind of relationship with where they will do exactly what you need them to do and it is not so much mother child or father child like you describe with Luna. She will get there though. I am glad you got her.

Luna is just a child yet, in spite of her size. She is not yet 5 months old.

@marguicha Oh wow, she is a German Shepherd if I remember right . I did not know she was that young, was picturing more like one year. I think that is when Tristan used to drive me nuts, but he was probably more of an exception because he was a true alpha and his energy level was much more high strung than a normal German Shepherd.
Kai we got about 1 and half and she has been pretty mellow every since we got her. She I would describe more of an average German Shepherd in goofy as hell but listens and follows the rules to a tee.

@marguicha I hear you, believe in California it is illegal to sell puppies from a store anymore. They want you to go to a shelter to get them. That does not stop breeders from doing it though and most times people will only buy a puppy and adopt a puppy more so than and adult dog.
I just looked that up and who knew. They say short hair are more common in German Shepherds but for many dog breeds that is considered long hair. I think I know what you mean and Kai is also short hair. The long hair ones look like a big giant fur ball walking around.
Those types of German Shepherds must shed like no other.

Both of your dogs sound incredible. It is so true - with cats I find they have different personalities, though with all of them I feel like I am their friend/treat giver lol

I mourned Misty for years and would not want another dog for fear that I´d make unhealthy comparisons. But Luna has been a blessing for me. And had given me a sense of my life.

@marguicha I know the feeling. I don't want pets of my own right now because I know what's going to happen eventually. I'm happy you gave Luna a chance though
