Day 19 Mark 8:14-21 Mark 8:14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them more than one loaf. 15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. 16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread. 17 And when Jesus knew it, he said unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? Perceive ye not yet, neither understand? Have ye your heart yet hardened? 18 Having eyes, see ye not? And having ears, hear ye not? And do ye not remember? 19 When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve. 20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments took ye up? And they said, Seven. 21 And he said unto them, How is it that ye do not understand? How many times have you heard someone speak, and though it sounded good on the surface, it wasn’t. The person or persons used cunning words to make what you heard sound good and something you wanted to get involved with. It wasn’t until you thought about what was said, that you started to see the holes in the person’s speech. Jesus told the disciples they needed to be careful what the Pharisees taught them, even what Herod said, because it wasn’t always right. As Christians, you know it isn’t what a person does that’s misleading, but what a person says that can cause a person to act unbecoming. Your actions are a result of what you hear. You can be persuaded to actions leading to pain and misery. Or, you can be persuaded to actions that bring about everything good in your life. When you feed on the Word of God, opening your Bible and reading it for yourself, and not just relying on what someone else tells you is in the Bible, you won’t be taken in by cunning words that will lead you away from what is right. Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. (KJV) 2 Timothy 2:14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers. 15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness. Consider what you hear. Weigh it against what you know is right and just, and act accordingly. Let’s pray: Father, help me consider everything I hear before jumping in and doing something that will only bring me trouble. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
