A gloriously beautiful midweek morning dawns here in the land of the hockey sticks (if you've ever noticed, there are hockey sticks that say "Louisville" on them...well, they're made by the same company that makes the Louisville Slugger baseball bat!). I'm ready to provide no shock whatsoever as I give you the next "classic" album that was wildly popular, and I owned it, too! To no one's surprise, here's today's album.
#8: Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
Yeah, John Roberts knew this one was coming. So did everyone else who knows me.
One of EJ's best selling albums (at 14 million), Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was his first "double" album. Released in the middle of his prolific period (1971-1976), this became -- and probably remains -- the definitive Elton John album.
And why not? This has something for everyone: the gorgeous ballad (the title song), hard rock ("Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"), odes to early rock ("Your Sister Can't Twist [But She Can Rock and Roll]"), cowboy film stars ("Roy Rogers"), and Marilyn Monroe ('Candle in the Wind"). Oh, and let's not forget one of the great "misheard lyrics" of all time. No, folks, he's saying "electric boots."
Elton was my teenybopper idol, so naturally I had this. I still do. I've had endless hours of enjoyment from this album, and for me, it's earned its place on the list of "classic albums."
